A hifi is a system where performance is the result of the combination of the things in that system. Not to mention the room it lives in.
Most people want the same thing from a small speaker—big sound. Amar Bose went to some lengths in his Wave Radios to deliver on this promise but you can only twist the truth so far. The Wave Radio sounded like a big table radio. If […]
Just like the title says. I give you…
Imagine you are walking down the street on your way to your favorite restaurant. As you approach the front door of Chez Écoute, the door recedes. The closer you try to get to it, the door continues its backward slide remaining just out of reach. […]
There’s something going in the Barn. It’s a secret. For now.
Everyone likes to type “iTunes is dead.” (I do) Beyond the schadenfreude appeal, there’s the clickbatefulnesss of the headline. Truth be told, iTunes is not dead. It’s just been dismembered.
Danish Audiophile Loudspeaker Industries. That’s what DALI stands for so you can remove that mustachioed artists’ image from your head. Along with a group of colleagues, I spent a few days before High End Munich 2019 visiting the DALI factory in Nørager, Denmark.
If you’ve been here before, you may have noticed my affinity for Audioquest (AQ) headphones. Their sound made sense to me from the start. I’ve likely posted thousands of words about them. I know, enough already. Well, it seems we’re not quite done yet, as […]

The Audioengine A2 speakers and I have history. We go back, way back.
What’s next? I was thinking the same thing. Here’s a (mostly) complete list of the upcoming HiFi Shows for 2019.
The last several years have seen Shunyata Research enter a particularly creative period with the release of the Hydra Denali Series and the higher performance Hydra Triton v3 power distributor. Caelin Gabriel, founder and President of Shunyata Research, has released his new version of the […]
Extremism in HiFi? How can there be such a thing in a hobby whose purpose is the enjoyment of music? The answer, which applies to many cases of modern day extremism? The Internet.
Hot off the press, here are the attendance numbers for High End Munich 2019 (impressive):
This year I took a different approach to the High End Munich Show as compared to years past. Instead of beginning with the knowledge that there is no way one person can cover all of this show and then trying to do so, I wandered […]
I’m not one to gossip. But.
OK, it’s a photo gallery. Extravaganza just sounded more exciting!
Here are some of the things I spied at High End Munich 2019 that captured my attention mainly because they strike me as being in need of further examination in Barn (some exceptions where noted). Warning: not everything I found interesting is new.
The MBL room at Axpona 2019 ranked among my favorites—”All enveloping, all consuming, nearly overwhelming, this MBL system grabbed every bit of me and didn’t let go.” I repeat these words because they easily apply to Munich, which is one reason I always spend some […]
I have owned, used, lived with, and loved speakers from DeVore Fidelity for decades. These days, my gibbon X fill the Barn with sweet, sweet music damn-near every day and listening to them now, after being away for what feels like a while, is like […]
Many moons ago, I walked into a NYC hifi shop with a person/reviewer I had just met. We were there to hear the just-arrived-from-Germany Auditorium 23 loudspeakers.
It’s difficult, at least for me, to make appointments during show hours because time at the massively massive and heavily crowded High End Show is dear and I prefer to wander where my interests take me.
My father and I had our differences, who doesn’t with theirs?, but our meeting place, the thing that always brought us together, was hifi and music.
