Album of the Week: Bury Me (EP) by Ora Cogan

Ora Cogan is represented by NYC’s Sacred Bones label which means something to me. More often than not, it means I’m going to like what I hear.

From Ora Cogan’s website:

Ora Cogan’s approach to songwriting melds traditional, experimental, and psychedelic into something wholly unique. Cogan is known for her singular voice and cinematic compositions. She has collaborated with a multitude of artists while touring extensively throughout Europe & North America, sharing the stage with the likes of Grouper and Mazzy Star.

If your taste in music runs along similar lines as mine, “Grouper and Mazzy Star” have your ears piqued, i.e. interested. I’ve been digging into Cogan’s 2023 LP Formless for a few months which served as my introduction to her work while leading me here to Bury Me released back in April.

From the liner notes:

Bury Me is the result of a ceaseless dedication to creativity. While holed up in her Nanaimo, BC studio working on the follow-up to 2023’s Formless, Cogan couldn’t help but keep writing. The songs are foggy, cryptic companions to the songs written for the upcoming LP that took a form of their own necessitating a separate release. With the help of legendary cellist Lori Goldston (Nirvana) Swedish violinist Ester Thunander, Harpist Elisa Thorn, co-producers Tom Deis and David Parry (Loving), and long-time collaborators Finn Smith & Al Murray the songs fleshed themselves out over the backdrop of a dreary, cold winter.

You had me at “foggy, cryptic companions”.
