Album of the Week: Mal Waldron | Searching in Grenoble : The 1978 Solo Piano Concert

We have San Francisco-based Tompkins Square to thank for bringing us this previously unreleased live solo set from Mal Waldron.

Mal Waldron’s The Quest, released in 1962 on the New Jazz label, remains a favorite record for its slow, strange beauty and Waldron remains a favorite musician, bringing his slow, strange beauty to everything he touched. Searching in Grenoble : The 1978 Solo Piano Concert is no exception and it’s a real treat to hear Waldron this late in his career still searching for elusive answers.

Featuring Waldron penned classics including “Soul Eyes” and “All Alone” as well as jazz standards like “You Don’t Know What Love Is” and “It Could Happen To You”, Waldron was Billie Holidays’ last accompanist so he knows his was around a standard,  Searching in Grenoble is a welcome 1:44 journey with Mal to the far reaches of this singular voice.
