In Barn for Review: Denafrips IRIS USB Digital To Digital Converter

Digital To Digital Converter? Why convert digital to digital? For robots with hifis?

There’s 1,000 words worth of explanation. The Denafrips IRIS USB Digital To Digital Converter takes a USB input and converts it to a number of digital outputs including I2S over HDMI (LVDS Standard) or RJ45 (LVCMOS Standard), S/PDIF (Coax and Toslink), and AES/EBU. Those two BNC inputs are for attaching an external (word) clock.

Inside resides the company’s proprietary FPGA DSP Processing, FIFO Buffer & Reclocking, and Industry Leading USB Audio Interface Solution via STM32F466 Advanced AMR based MCU. This is all meant to improve the incoming signal through the IRIS’ output.

I plan to test drive the IRIS using the underwhelming Raspberry Pi 4’s USB output (review) to see if the combo can overwhelm. We shall see (hear).
