Julia Jacklin is one of the kinda rare artists whose music is always welcome, no matter where/when it shows up. Like a beloved friend or kinda rare relative that you actually enjoy seeing.
Jacklin’s Crushing made my Favorite Records of 2019 list, and I’ve been looking forward to what’s next ever since. Pre Pleasure is what’s next and it’s having its way with my sense of wonder and delight as I type. From big bold ballads to quieter retreats, Pre Pleasure is prickly and peachy.
There’s also a very strong sense of the love of the word, with lines and phrases twisting off Jacklin’s tongue like poetry being pushed around by the beat. This creates a kind of tension, between what and what is up to you (and the lyrics). I hear an overriding sense of joy and wonder, maybe a bit bruised, but resilient.

Pop with a twist goes Pre Pleasure, out today on Polyvinyl Records.
