Album of the Week: Jessica Bailiff | Jessica Bailiff

I reached all the way back to Jessica Bailiff’s self-titled album from 2002 to share this week’s pick because I was looking for something sweet without being saccharine.

Bailiff, who hails from Toledo, Ohio, was discovered by Alan Sparhawk of Low fame, who recommended her to kranky, the label responsible for this and scads more great records (hint: search this site for “kranky” and you may be surprised to find not me ;-).

Typically classified as ‘slowcore’, here’s how Bailiff answered this question when posed by NPR:

How would you describe your music?

Loud, dirty sounds with a soft voice, or pretty sounds with vocals with an undercurrent of something distorted or psychedelic; more into a pop song structure than not, but not at all pop music. This is always a difficult question!

Not at all pop music. Sweet without being saccharine.
