In Barn for Review: Dynaudio Confidence 60 Loudspeakers

Go big and stay home.

The cut sheet: bass reflex design with down-firing port, 17″x 66 1/8″ x 20 3/8″ (W x H x D), 146 lbs., 28mm Esotar3 tweeter, 2x 15cm MSP (Magnesium Silicate Polymer) with Horizon midrange drivers, 2x 23cm MSP woofers, frequency response: 29Hz – 22Khz (± 3dB), sensitivity: 87 dB (@ 2.83V/1m), rated impedance: 4 Ohms, minimum impedance: 3.7 Ohms @ 71 Hz.

Fun factor: TBD.

You are looking at a detail of the Confidence 60’s curvy DDC (Dynaudio Directivity Control) Compex composite front baffle and DDC Lens surrounding the Esotar3 tweeter.

From the company:

The star of the show is the DDC Lens – a machined aluminium waveguide integrated into the precision Compex composite baffle. This ingenious part (the result of hundreds of hours of simulations, prototyping and listening tests) works in conjunction with the baffle shape, the tweeter and the midrange drivers (notice their Horizon Surround, also part of the system) and the woofers to focus sound waves where they need to go: you.

To be more explicit, the Confidence speakers are designed to be room friendly with controlled dispersion to reduce room-related reflections. Nice. Even after listening for just a few hours after properly/expertly set up on the Barn’s B-Side by John Quick of Dynaudio North America and Richard Henthorne of Indy Audio Labs I knew I was in for treat—namely getting to spend 2 months (give or take) with Dynaudio’s flagship Confidence 60s. Sometimes you just know sooner than later.

Most every thing about the Confidence 60 is new, inside and out, and I’ll dig into those details in the review proper. In the mean time, you can learn about the Confidence line in Dynaudio’s series of 6 podcasts that dig into some nice details. The review pair are sporting the Smoke High Gloss finish (which is not too high gloss) but the big Confidence also come in other flavors including Blonde Wood and Midnight High Gloss.

You’ll find a single set of WBT ‘Nextgen’ binding posts around back.

The Confidence 60 cabinets are curved and tapered toward the back giving them an elegant air (i.e. not just a box).

perfectly Barn-sized

I plan to listen. A lot.
