When I use air travel, which hasn’t happened in some time, I like to listen to music the entire time flying. From pre-takeoff to landing. I used to own and use a cheap pair of wired RHA in ears leashed to a DragonFly Red. With RMAF looming in the not too distant future (yay!!), I did a bag check to make sure everything was up to snuff. Turns out, my RHAs were no longer for this world, a victim of time and use. They served me well.
So I went (virtual) shopping for a replacement. My wife has a pair of Sony WH1000XM3 Noise Cancelling Headphones which I’ve tried and like, she enjoys them too, so I narrowed my search using “Sony” as a filter and the idea of cutting ties with wires was appealing, seeing as I’ve entangled myself on more than one occasion.
I should note that I don’t travel on a plane very often, so my budget for these ‘phones was on the very low side. In these cases, seeing a relatively new model pop up, like the Sony WF-1000XM4 ($278), is welcome news because that means the old model will go on discount.
And so it was. The WF-1000XM3 were originally priced at $229.99, but you can find them anywhere these days for $198. Which is great, but still outside my travel tunes budget. I frowned at the screen then looked down the Amazon page and low and behold, my rocketman friends at Amazon offer a Renewed pair for $79.99! Now that’s more like it!
While I have yet to board a silver tube for parts unknown, I have taken the Sony WF-1000XM3 for a ride and I am pleasantly pleased with their performance, even in a place as quiet and un-airplane-like as the Barn. My pair show no signs of a previous life, looking brand spankin’ new. Amazon offers a 90-day no fuss return policy for their renewed products, so there’s very little risk involved.
Added up and renewed for good measure, this makes the Sony WF-1000XM3 a genuine HiFi Bargain.
