Magnetic levitation always sounds like sci-fi to me as its promise of floating free from gravity fueled many a sci-fi flick transport back in the day. Not to mention magicians invisible powers.
Esoteric’s MagneDrive System first appeared in their Grandioso T1 turntable (RRP: $92,000) that offers “contact-free drive technology.” In theory what could be a better way of isolating a turntable’s spinning platter from unwanted vibration and noise than have it float free using magic magnets.
Cool, right?

A “Magnetic Driver” is mounted on the top of the drive motor. The side of the Magnetic Driver is a dome-shaped magnet with alternating S and N poles. The platter is made of non-magnetic aluminum, but a soft iron “Induction Wheel” surrounds the lower part of the platter side, positioned in close proximity to the Magnetic Driver mounted on the motor assembly. As the Magnetic Driver rotates, the platter rotates synchronously with the induced magnetic force applied to the Induction Wheel. Because this induction mechanism operates without direct physical contact, the platter remains isolated from motor-borne vibration and rumble.
Cooler still, the Esoteric T-01 can be fitted with two arms but if you’re thinking what I was thinking, it only spins at 33 11/2 and 45. And in an interesting twist on a more typically digital theme, you can add an external 10MHz clock for the motor drive unit via the Esoteric G-01XD or G-05 even though the T-01 already has “A High-Quality ‘Master Sound Discrete Clock’ Motor Driver” that “Ensures exceptionally accurate platter rotation”. What’s better than exceptional?
The T-01 also inherits the Grandioso’s aluminum and wood chassis, albeit a dual layer as opposed to the Grandioso’s triple layer, with the mid-chassis sporting a high gross piano lacquer for some nice visual contrast. As you can see, the power supply resides in its own luxurious aluminum chassis making the entire package lust-worthy to me.
The Esoteric T-01 Turntable will begin shipping in September 2026 with a suggested retail price of $50,000 with the T-01AL tonearm and $46,000 without.
