Album of the Week: Titanic | Vidrio

Titanic, the band, is Mabe Fratti (cello and vocals), Jarrett Gilgore (saxophone), Gibran Andrade (drums) and together they perform compositions by i.la Católica who also plays piano and guitar on Vidrio.

As regular readers may remember, I’m a fan of Mabe Fratti and found her 2022 album Se Ve Desde Aquí “a dizzying slow-paced journey of discovery”, while 2021’s Estática, featuring Mexico City-based sound artist Concepción Huerta, delighted with “the sound of sounds unraveled and re-wrapped, bending time exploiting space for intrepid exploration.” In other words, I really dug, and dug into, both.

Vidrio is bigger and broader, reaching out with Fratti’s vocals in (art) song form while hanging on to classical and jazz structures making for a lovely daring sound construction over 35 minutes of dizzying exploration.
