Album of the Week: Tirzah | trip9love…???

Stripped bare to the bone.

I’ve been following Tirzah since her first release, Devotion from 2018, and I find her evolution in sound and music fascinating, as it has been moving further from popular forms and structures with each release. trip9love…???, her third record released on Domino earlier this week, continues her work with producer Mica Levi and its the most skeletal to date.

From the liner notes:

After several recording sessions over roughly a year, eventually the music suddenly came into a sound that they wanted to follow. The tracks were built using piano loops on top of one beat, distortion added, then romantic vocal toplines. Poems centre on themes of love, both real and imagined. The world the record finds space in is a lazy club fantasy zone.

This is meditative and moving, a beautiful and personal sound capable of touching dark recesses, stirring deeply.
