As far as I’m concerned, there’s no such thing as too much Lee “Scratch” Perry.
Perry’s stone cold classic Super Ape from 1976 acted as my intro to his universe and oh what a beautiful trip it’s been traveling through his massive catalog of wonders. Perry moved on in 2021 and this collaboration with German electronic duo Jan St. Werner and Andi Toma of Mouse on Mars was his last, recorded in 3 days at Mouse on Mars’ Paraverse Studio in Berlin in 2019.

Once upon a time, Mouse on Mars asked Lee “Scratch” Perry about space, Jamaican fish stew was in the air. Specifically, they asked of his familiarity with Spatial Audio and multi-channel sound diffusion. His response provides not only the title of this epic collage of genres, but the very method of its making. “Spatial,” he said, grinning, “No problem.”
Perry was larger than life, more than a person as his persona and influence have spread far and wide. Here on Spatial, No Problem. his distinct voice grounds these tracks while lifting them up way higher than a kite right into outer space. Similar to William S. Burroughs in this regard with just as much well deserved gravitas. But this record sounds like a celebration that reaches all the way down to your dancin’ soul.
