Album of the Week: Little Wide Open by Kevin Morby

Sometimes easy does it.

Let’s being with the album cover and an admission—I love sunflowers. And I love sunflowers for their stature, mind-blowing beauty, and Vincent Van Gogh. As fate would have it our tiny town has a sunflower contest every year, “Sunflowers in the Glen,” that runs right down Main Street. A joy to behold with those blazing sun lookalikes bending toward the light.

Kevin Morby makes compelling music and his song “Bittersweet, Tennessee” both in its original form and from More Photographs (A Continuum) with Nashville’s Erin Rae lending her voice (to both versions) is one easy example of how he can take over time.

Little Wide Open, released on Dead Oceans back in May, has moved into my “Favorite Kevin Morby Album” slot as it feels and flows like it was meant to be from beginning to end perfectly blending words, sounds, movements, and moods easy as a sunny sunflower-filled morning.
