I love me a good pair of powered speakers because it makes hifi life so simple. I like simple, too.
The new powered PSB Alpha AM3 ($399/pair) and Alpha AM5 ($599/pair) speakers also include a DAC and phono input! and come wrapped in a Matte White or Matte Black finish, while their differences boil down to size and power. The Alpha AM3 sport a 4” woofer and a 35W x 2 digital amp, while the AM5 ups those specs to a 5.25” woofer and a 50W x 2 amplifier. Both models use a ¾” aluminium ferrofluid-cooled tweeter.
The Alpha’s inputs include USB (DAC), Toslink, Qualcomm® aptX™ Bluetooth, phono (RCA), 3.5mm analog, and a USB “Power Jack” for charging external devices (5V), while a Sub Out allows for the addition of more bass. The Alpha 3s are a desktop friendly 5 1/8” x 8 5/8” x 6 7/8”, while the Alpha 5s are a tad larger at 6 3/4” x 11 2/5” x 9 1/2”. Both speakers ship with a remote control.
Like all PSB speakers, final voicing was performed by Founder and Chief Designer, Paul Barton, at Canada’s famed National Research Council.
The Alpha series powered speakers are available now.
