Meet Matrix Audio’s New Full Featured mini-i 4 and mini-i Pro 4 Streaming DACs

China-based Matrix Audio popped up on my radar thanks to a recommendation from someone in the know just in time for the recent release of their new mini-i 4 and mini-i Pro 4 Streaming DACs.

A quick peak around back at both gives us a glimpse of the relevant ins and outs that include the usual digital suspects, a USB Type C input for USB storage that supports FAT, FAT32, exFAT and NTFS file formats along with a pair of analog RCAs that offers three input gain levels for your turntable (at least that’s how I see it). Single-ended and balanced outputs are a welcome option, especially for a sub $1k and sub $700 streaming DAC.

Another welcome feature is the 3.46-inch LCD touch screen that you’ll find on both the mini-i 4 and mini-i Pro 4. Both mini-i’s also rely on the ES9039Q2M D/A chip from ESS for D to A conversion and Matrix has made the in-built filters available as user select-able options.

Flavor to taste.

Where they differ is the mini-i Pro 4 adds a fully balanced headphone amp along with a 6.35mm single-ended output and 4.4mm balanced output up front as well as a dual-band Wi-Fi connection.

Matrix Audio offers their own control app, MA Remote, for iOS and Android devices along with Roon Ready (certification undergoing), DLNA/UPnP, AirPlay 2, Spotify Connect and TIDAL Connect.

Both mini-i measure a mere 8.8″ wide and look pretty smart from where I sit.
