In Barn for Review: Cambridge Audio Edge A Integrated Amplifier

The Edge series of components represents UK-based Cambridge Audio’s top of the line(s) honoring the company’s 50th anniversary.

The Edge A Integrated Amplifier — named after Gordon Edge, an early Cambridge engineer who was responsible for their first product the P40 integrated amplifier — makes use of the company’s proprietary Class XA Amplification offering 100wpc into 8 Ohms, doubling down into 4. Opposing symmetry twin toroidal transformers are employed, cancelling out electromagnetic interference according to Cambridge. Component choice followed the listen first, measure later approach, blind-auditioning all price and performance levels in search of the best sounding mix.

The Edge A includes a built-in DAC with USB and S/PDIF (2x Toslink, 1x Coax) inputs, adding to the three analog inputs (2x RCA, 1x XLR). You can also beam to the Edge A via Bluetooth and bypass the internal amplifier using the Pre-Out outputs (RCA, XLR). A 1/4″ headphone jack is mounted on the unit’s front panel.

The Edge A’s clean, curved extruded aluminum lines, heatsinked sides, and massive centered volume/source selector knob, comprised of 31 precision-milled engineered parts, make for a very handsome appearance. Definitely top-of-the-rack looks and I am happy to report that the included near-tactical weight metal remote matches the Edge A’s robust build quality and good looks.

I have to share that unboxing the Edge A from its very protective shipping cartons and silky black zippered pouch made for a “Damn! This thing is impressively built!” moment. I love when that happens.
