Fania Records Lives On

Concord Music, home to Stax and Rounder to name just two, announced last week they’ve purchased Fania Records from Código for an undisclosed sum.

Fania has been a Latin-music powerhouse since 1964, acting as a veritable who’s who of artists including Willie Colon, Celia Cruz, Larry Harlow, Ray Barretto, Ralfi Pagan, Luis “Perico” Ortiz, Bobby Valentín, Rubén Blades, Héctor Lavoe, Cheo Feliciano, Adalberto Santiago, Ismael Miranda and more. Many more.

Concord’s roster

The first time I heard about Fania was from my friend Stephen Mejias way back in 2000-somthing. Stephen wrote a number of lovely pieces on his love of Fania in his much-missed column on Stereophile. There’s nothing like passion and a way with words to stoke the fires of influence.

Here are two of my favorites from Stephen on Fania: Mucho Amor, La Gran Fuga.

Long live Fania!
