Darko.Audio Podcast #40: The MoFi Scandal and More

The latest Darko.Audio podcast finds us covering a number of topics from streaming technology’s life-span to the most contentious news to hit the world of hifi in years – The MoFi Affair.

As far as I can tell, Darko and I approach The MoFi Affair from a different angle than most of the coverage so far, at least the 2% I’ve seen out of the 4 billion YouTube videos. It seems everyone, and their mother, has something to say about The MoFi Affair even if that something has been said 1000 times before.

In addition to our rather lengthy discussion, I want to add a few key points for clarification.

On Business Practices

  1. In my opinion, misleading customers as to what they’re actually buying is bad business practice.
  2. Admitting you’ve been misleading your customers only AFTER you’ve been caught doing so by a third party makes this bad business practice even worse.

On Sound Quality

  1. The MoFi releases, by most accounts and by and large, sound really good. In some cases, they represent what many people believe to be the best sounding examples of a given record.
  2. The fact that some of the MoFi vinyl releases include a digital step in the mastering chain doesn’t change how they sound.

On Preference
Some people…

  1. …prefer to buy all-analog recordings (AAA).
  2.  …prefer to buy all-digital recordings (DDD).
  3.  …enjoy everything regardless of its SPARS code.
  4. …prefer analog playback.
  5. …prefer digital playback.
  6. …enjoy both.

Conclusions

  1. It’s not my place to tell other people what to do, or not do, about The MoFi Affair.
  2. I prefer to enjoy more, not less.
