Album of the Week: Rhye

It’s been going like this—play “Cellophane”, the crazy-lovely new single from FKA twigs, cue up Rhye’s Spirit EP next, sit back, and dream.

Spirit is not hard to listen to or to lie down in. Mike Milosh is joined by Icelandic composer Ólafur Arnalds on “Patience” and we’re talking about a piano-driven chamber study in slow, easy, burn. At first blush, I thought Spirit might be too light, too ephemeral but then I listened and listened some more and found the sweet warm center soothing.

My dad was a classical violinist, and I played cello forever as a child. I grew up listening to classical music. It’s been really fascinating to follow this new wave of classical musicians that are doing this mellow, sentimental and emotional music that’s not overly technical, even though their technique is very unique. I really connect with it. Ólafur Arnalds is one of these musicians. Nils Frahm is too.

I really connect with it, too.

Spirit is available from Loma Vista Recordings.
