Album of the Week: Lankum | False Lankum

Dirges, drones, death, and doom can be oddly uplifting.

Dublin’s Lankum—Raddie Peat, brothers Ian and Daragh Lynch, and Cormac Mac Diarmada—have been a favorite since I first heard their 2019 release The Livelong Day, “a powerful, stunning, and moving mix of the old and new.” Their latest, False Lankum released in March on Rough Trade Records, carries on this tradition while digging deeper into dirge, drone, death, and doom to birth hard won beauty, an icy gale of a record that wheezes, chugs, and burrows its way into your dancing darkness.

“From my rotting body, flowers shall grow and I am in them and that is eternity.” Edvard Munch
