Album of the Week: La Luz

“And you’ll never hear surf music again” Jimi Hendrix from “Third Stone From the Sun”. Every regular reader knows I adore Jimi but in this case I’ll have to disagree. La Luz is Shana Cleveland (guitar), Marian Li Pino (drums), Alice Sandahl (keyboard) and Lena Simon (bass) and they play surf music.

I happen to love surf music, the more twang and reverb the better, and I also love surfing although I have never surfed (but I dream of being a surfer).  There’s also my adoration of ’60s “girl groups’ like The Shirelles, The Ronettes, The Shangri-Las, and The Feminine Connection to name just a few. I read about La Luz and their album Floating Features on Bandcamp’s Best of 2018 list, gave it a quick listen, and just as quickly fell in love.

From the label:

Only La Luz could conjure up Floating Features’ Leone-on-LSD vibes, and the album finds the L.A. band at the height of their powers–golden rebels in a golden dream.

[Sergio] Leone-on-LSD vibes. Yes! There’s that too!

If Floating Features fails to make you feel good, golden even, check your pulse.
