Album of the Week: Jackie Mittoo | The Keyboard King At Studio One

It doesn’t get much funkier than Jackie Mitto, the scorching hot Keyboard King. Think “Green Onions” by way of Jamaica with extra spice.

Beginning in the 1960s, Mitto was a member of The Skatalites, at age 15!, The Sheiks, The Soul Brothers, The Soul Vendors, and Sound Dimension. He was also a composer, arranger, and songwriter for Studio One, putting him at the enter of the Ska, Rocksteady and Reggae universe, which he helped create.

The Keyboard King At Studio One from Soul Jazz Records collects Mittoo’s Studio One work, mostly from the ’60s, into one very compelling package. Totaling nearly one full hour of get up and dance time, The Keyboard King is keyboard driven joy. You cannot, and I mean can not, feel bad when listening to Jackie Mittoo tickle those keys.

A special blue vinyl gatefold sleeve edition of Jackie Mittoo – The Keyboard King At Studio One will be available from Soul Jazz hitting UK stores on 4 September and online at 9pm (UK time) on the same day. I suggest getting into that virtual queue early.

In the mean time, put on your dancin’ shoes and click play.
