Album of the Week: Beings | There Is A Garden

Talk about your Supergroups…

I rarely do, talk about supergroups, because they have a tendency to make me me me music. Hardly a group at all.

Beings is: Zoh Amba (saxophone, vocals, acoustic guitar, harmonium, piano), Steve Gunn (electric guitar), Shahzad Ismaily (bass, synth), and Jim White (drums). And There Is A Garden is their super record. Leaps tall buildings.

I admit that Zoh Amba is new to me, but you can count me among her fans (yea, I hear some Albert Ayler, too). Steve Gunn had me at Time Off, I had the great pleasure of seeing Shahzad Ismaily perform with another supergroup led by Marc Ribot as Ceramic Dog, and I hope to see Jim White as part of his other supergroup Dirty Three some day. Maybe I do talk about supergroups more often than I thought.

There Is A Garden, released on No Quarter back in June, is this supergroup’s debut and it’s a stunner. Free, jazz, psych, and songs, fasten your seat belts stuff,  from a unit that sounds like one mind. Super!
