Album of the Week: Annelies Monseré | I sigh, I resign

Belgian artist and musician Annelies Monseré presents a series of home recorded meditations.

I sigh, I resign, released on Horn Of Plenty in June of this year, is comprised of piano, organ, bass guitar, cello, synth, drum machine and Monseré’s vocals all recorded up close making for an intimate and deep journey where folk and baroque blend to form a timeless tapestry.

From the liner notes:

This album explores history, its weight, and its exclusions on both a general and personal level. The drawings were inspired by the work of historically marginalized and excluded artists, namely: Judith Leyster, Rachel Ruysch, Maria Van Oosterwijck, Margaretha Haverman, Clara Peeters, Margareta de Heer, and Anna Maria Janssens.

The artists referenced are from the Dutch Golden Age and I am sorry to say that not one of them were mentioned in all the years of art history courses I sat through, to Monseré’s point. The album art is by Monseré and I also hear a reference to Nico in the mix. Lovely.
