Album of the Week: Alex G | God Save The Animals

Kindness. Cruelty. Seems like an easy choice yet some people make the wrong one over and over and over.

From the God Save The Animals liner notes:

“God” figures in the ninth album from Philadelphia, PA based Alex Giannascoli’s LP’s title, its first song, and multiple of its thirteen tracks thereafter, not as a concrete religious entity but as a sign for a generalized sense of faith (in something, anything) that fortifies Giannascoli, or the characters he voices, amid the songs’ often fraught situations.

God Save The Animals is one of the most generous records I’ve heard—generous in spirit, sound, and message. Giannascoli enlisted the help of six engineers to craft the sound of God Save The Animals and their varied voices shine through yet the album flows seamlessly as a beautiful glowing whole.

Maybe some people feel kindness is kinda corny, maybe its not masculine enough for those who never grew out of childhood’s false dichotomies. After all, lots of people in power want to force feed this simple formula down as many throats as will open for a world view that pits us against them (a tale as old as time). Having an enemy provides purpose for empty shells.

From closer “Forgive”: Forgive yesterday, I choose today.
