Animal Collective’s Panda Bear is my favorite solo Animal but both the band and the Bear remind me of, among other things, the Beach Boys. Mexico’s Tony Gallardo’s Abizzmo, his first album as ANSIEDAD1000, reminds me of all three albeit farther out.
Released on Uganda’s Hakuna Kulala label last month, Abizzmo is a rich odd fractured cut up of oddities in song like someone took a stew that’s been simmering for years concocted by countless cooks and slapped it into a record press.
From the liner notes:
With ABIZZZMO, Tony Gallardo — the mercurial Mexican musician behind María y José and a dozen other cult monikers — unveils his most personal and strangely beautiful project yet. Under the name ANSIEDAD1000, Gallardo trades reggaeton mutations and noise-cumbia experiments for a widescreen indie pop vision: anxious, psychedelic, and unexpectedly tender.
“Strangely beautiful” are perfect words to describe Abizzmo with its rich unexpected voices and infectious beats. Take a gulp.
