I started playing guitar when I was a kid and only recently decided to stop playing what I know.
What I knew became stale and sloppy as if some sense of weary nostalgia had completely taken over my hands. Ick. My father enjoyed guitar players and I have him to thank for introducing me to Joe Pass, among many others, and I carry on his affection for sounds made from six strings.
Lonesome For A Storm by Gustav Kemps, released on LA’s Motion Ward back in April, is one such example. I’m reminded in some ways of Loren Connors for this music’s stark loneliness and stillness with church bells off in the distance acting as a reminder that we’re not alone while highlighting distance. Kemp is joined by Lily Beltane on vocals for two tracks, “Fog” and “Afterglow”, adding another dimension to these fragile deep seas.
