Album of the Week: Babehoven | Sunk

Babehoven’s Sunk, an EP released on Double Double Whammy in March, is a slow dance around subjects seemingly trivial and epic.

Featuring lyrics and songs by Maya Bon who is the star of this show with Ryan Albert accompanying her flights from despair on up.

Simple songs with a folk flair, the band cites Elliott Smith’s Either/Or as inspiration, an album whose title comes from Søren Kierkegaard’s work of the same name, or about as far from don’t worry, be happy as you can get. Which suits me just fine, as anyone looking past their own nose knows things aren’t all roses.

With many songs relying heavily on just vocals and guitar, you have to have something to say/sing to maintain interest and Sunk succeeds and then some, spinning tales soft and soaring that somehow seem essential.
