Album of the Week: Tomin | A Willed and Conscious Balance

When it comes to new ‘jazz’, the more spiritual the better.

Come to think of it, most any music that’s cared for is spiritual in nature seeing as the act of creation can’t happen without at least some. Spirit.

A Willed and Conscious Balance is composer and multi-instrumentalist Tomin Perea-Chamblee’s debut ensemble album, released on International Anthem earlier this month, a collection of mostly original compositions with tributes to Booker Little and Kalaparusha Maurice McIntyre closing things out.

The players:

Tomin Perea-Chamblee – Flute, Alto and Bass Clarinets, Trombone, Euphonium, Bells, Sine Waves (Casio MT-70) and additional Trumpet
Teiana Davis – Rhodes, Wurlitzer, and Spaceship (Casiotone 1000p)
ClĂ©rida EltimĂ© – Cello
Lester St. Louis – Cello
Linton Smith II – Trumpet, Tambourine, and Yamaha HS-500
Luke Stewart – Bass
Tcheser Holmes – Drums

This isn’t difficult music the way some (free) jazz can be, but generous, gentle music in form and performance.
